ZEPHYR TMBRE PLAYS AT THE GREAT NORTHERN ON FRIDAY NITE

As I ascend slowly down the distorted, ultra-violet spirals, I can't help but imagine what it must be like to grasp eagerly at the straws of fame and find yourself doing the breaststroke in an overly hedonistic, oversize cocktail glass. But I, Trevor Goodchild, am here for a reason - to ask the illustrious members of Zephyr Timbre what their respective New Year's resolutions are...

After knocking three times on the rusty trapdoor-style entrance to what appears to be the band's subterranean base of operations, I am greeted by a tiny white rabbit (about three centimetres in length). It beckons me with a twitch of it's nose, and before I know it, I'm slouched in a giant black couch, surrounded by minimalist furnishings and the scent of opium. The soft throbbing of an 808 drum machine permeates the airwaves as Manta Ray, Shureshock, Porl DeVille & Dakar emerge from the shadows, almost in slow motion. And to these individuals I ask my single question... "What will be, in 2003?"

Manta Ray - "I want to cultivate corn. Fields and fields of little corn cobs... I will ride my custom-made combine harvester and give corn to the world. Much corn will l give."

Shureshock - "This year will be the year of appropriately sized underwear. There is much to be said for correct cuppage and comfortable elastic. I will also endeavour to address everyone as 'Brian', as this will put an end to forgetting names and will make space in my brain for other exploits. Thanking."

Porl DeVille - "Personally, I would like to put a stop on excessive maturity. I firmly believe in childish behaviour, general hijinks and ridiculous shenanigans. Other than that, I wish to find a way of replicating coconuts - for an endless supply of coconuts would be a spectacular thing to behold."

Dakar - "My plans for this year are absolutely top secret. If so much as a smidgen leaks out to the general public then I will find those responsible and have them poked with salamanders. A lot."

THUR. At The RAILS

OLD SPICE BOYS

The Big Men of Small Music Azo Bell - ukulele, Tim Reeves - snare drum, Billy Milroy- tea-chest bass.

The Old Spice Boys are a comic swing trio. They play unusual, minimal instruments with virtuosity, charm and wit. From Byron Bay, 800 km north of Sydney on the North Coast of New South Wales they are big favourites at jazz, folk, blues and comedy festivals throughout Australia.

Using just a ukulele, a tea-chest (one-string) bass and a solitary snare drum the Old Spice Boys stroll fearlesssly through an extraordinary repertoire of their own hilarious songs alongside most unlikely interpretations of tunes by artists from Miles Davis to Ian Dury, from Prince to Bill Haley to John Coltrane
