Lounge Chair Rappers

Jo is our new columnist for Back To Front Magazine. She will be reporting on all the major events in Byron.

Only hours before the blues festival kicks off The Backroom of the Northern Hotel is filled to over flowing. The audience already fuelled by bevies and dance music let out a cheer as the band takes to the stage.

The free- stylin' rap sounds of COUCHFUNK are familiar to many of the locals of the Bay. A conglomeration of like-minded musicians, mixers and d.js, 6 to 10 local lads and lasses come together to perform a mix of rap-funk, hip-hop, and ambient beats to the awaiting throng of followers.

The stage has become an institutional part of the performance. An array of retro lounges and vinnies handout complete with coffee table grace the stage (hence the name COUCHFUNK), creating the feeling of being in a share house lounge room.

The mix of live music and electronics beats creates an atmosphere of funky fun. These guys know how to get a crowd movin' and groovin', and this gig was no different. Once again this unusual ensemble rocked the crowd.

If you really liked these guys you can check them out again at there regular Backroom gigs or you can catch parts of the band doing their thing at the Tabanacal around the corner. Three stars out of five.
